Movie question

To change things up, I will not be talking about football or local politics.  Instead, I will ask a simple question.  Should I watch the movie Death Race?  If you don't remember this gem from 2008, here is the full length trailer:

The reason I ask this question is that my sister-in-law has remarked in the past that this is a great action movie. This past week when I was on travel I happened to be flipping through channels and caught about twenty minutes of the cinematic masterpiece that is Death Race.  From what I saw, it looked like a pretty bad movie.  And by bad, I don't mean bad as in good.  I mean bad as in terrible.

However, recently my sister-in-law, whose reviews of movies I respect and are generally very accurate, told me that Death Race is quite possibly in her top ten movies of all time.

This has gotten me to think that I should reevaluate my stance and consider watching Death Race.  The downside is that I would have to invest 111 minutes into a bad movie.  The upside is that I may finally see and learn to appreciate the acting skills of Jason Statham.

What say you loyal blog readers?  What should I do?  Everyone but my sister-in-law gets a vote.

  1. This movie so far exceeded my expectation in every regard. That is really why I love this movie. It is based on Death Race 2000, BUT it really looks like it was based on a terrible, easy video game. I will say that this movie is not as good as Statham's Crank. Death Race is ridiculously stupid.

  2. ooohh...is it as good as Ghost Rider? That is the real question. Did you know there is a sequel to that coming out? I was thinking we needed some more Nicolas Cage in the theater.

  3. Death Race is a good movie if you are a deaf mute. Pretty much terrible....terrible as in terrible..not good.

  4. The Net with Sandra Bullock is terrible as in terrible. Death Race is ridiculously stupid. It has Joan Allen in it! Why the hell did she sign on for that? I have many questions about that film that may never be answered. I don't think a sequel is in the making, though.

  5. Didn't you like Statham in Snatch?

  6. Statham was great in Snatch but I think we can all agree that Snatch and Death Race are two different genres and two completely different films.

  7. Rumor Has It was terrible. I walked out of that one in the theater, and I will sit through just about anything. Made of Honor was awful with Patrick Dempsey. Actually, I am just going to say that a terrible as in terrible movie almost HAS to be a romantic comedy of some sort. Seeing someone smashed up in an autoaccident will NEVER fail to please.

  8. On Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/death_race/ 63 reviewers gave it a fresh rating. Yes, yes 85 gave it a rotten rating, but 63 SAID IT WAS GOOD. Maybe Death Race isn't the best in his collection. After all, they made 3 Transporter films. I've only seen the 3rd one. That one stinks.

This has the potential to be freakin' awesome, but the same odds to be strategically awful.

  10. After you watch this flick you should check out this fine thespian's performance in Crank: High Voltage. Seriously, if you want a great action movie, go see the new Mission Impossible.

  11. I attempted to watch it but fell asleep. Dan on the other hand found it quite pleasant. I do like Jason Statham but would prefer to see him in an adaptation of E.M. Forster or Jane Austen.

  12. To the unknown person posting the trailer, I can assure you that movie will be astronomically awful. I would watch Death Race and Transporter 3 before watching that one.

Bob, after watching the trailer for Crank, I would rather watch Death Race. But I will plan on watching the New Mission Impossible. Let me guess. Ethan Hunt is disavowed....again.
